OASIS-E Spotlight: Should Brief Interview for Mental Status be Conducted?

June 27, 2023

Making sense of CMS guidelines is more challenging than ever after the launch of OASIS-E and the abundance of changes that go along with it. KanTime’s OASIS Spotlight series will spotlight specific OASIS items to simplify the ruling and help clinicians significantly improve their understanding of OASIS so they can move forward with accuracy.

C0100: SHOULD BRIEF INTERVIEW FOR MENTAL STATUS BE CONDUCTED?

C0100 is the initial OASIS item in the series of items for the BIMS. It is used to determine if the BIMS should occur. The BIMS is a structured cognitive test, which is considered more accurate and reliable than observation alone.

Time points:

Start of Care
Resumption of Care
Discharge from agency

Should Brief Interview for Mental Status be Conducted?

Code 0, No (patient is rarely/never understood)

If the interview should not be conducted because the patient is rarely/never understood; cannot respond verbally, in writing, or using another method; or an interpreter is needed but not available. Skip items C0200-C0500

Code 1, Yes

If the interview should be conducted because the patient is at least sometimes understood verbally, in writing, or using another method, and if an interpreter is needed, one is available. Proceed to C0200, Repetition of Three Words.

Dash is a valid response for this item.

A dash indicates “no information.” CMS expects dash use to be a rare occurrence.

Because this is to be a self-reported item, clinicians need to ask questions to elicit the most accurate response from their patients.

Stay tuned for next Monday’s spotlight so your practice can continue to stay ahead of the curve and provide elite patient care through the Oasis E changes.

We provide clinicians that are part of the Kantime enterprise system with links to the guidance from CMS for each individual OASIS item. If you would like to learn more about how better happens, contact us at sales@kanrad.com to schedule a demo.
