Making sense of CMS guidelines is more challenging than ever after the launch of OASIS-E and the abundance of changes that go along with it. KanTime’s OASIS Spotlight series will spotlight specific OASIS items to simplify the ruling and help clinicians significantly improve their understanding of OASIS so they can move forward with accuracy.
Per the OASIS Guidance manual:
“Health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions.”
Did you know that this item is intended to identify only the patient’s SELF REPORTED health literacy? No other source should be used. This means that no matter what you observe or is reported by family or caregivers, only the patient’s response is valid for B1300.
Time points:
- Start of Care
- Resumption of Care
- Discharge from agency-within 3 days of discharge
How often do you need to have someone help you when you read instructions, pamphlets, or other material from your doctor or pharmacy?
Code 0, Never
Code 1, Rarely
Code 2, Sometimes
Code 3, Often
Code 4, Always
Code 7, Patient declines to respond
Code 8, Patient unable to respond
Dash IS NOT a valid response for this item.
Because this is to be a self-reported item, clinicians need to ask questions to elicit the most accurate response from their patients.
We provide clinicians that are part of the KanTime enterprise system with links to the guidance from CMS for each individual OASIS item.
