Oasis-E Spotlight: Language

April 14, 2023

Making sense of CMS guidelines is more challenging than ever after the launch of OASIS-E and the abundance of changes that go along with it. KanTime’s OASIS Spotlight series will spotlight specific OASIS items to simplify the ruling and help clinicians significantly improve their understanding of OASIS so they can move forward with accuracy.

A1110: LANGUAGE

A1110 is intended to determine the patient’s self reported preferred language and need for an interpreter. CMS includes this information in their data collection because barriers in language can result in social isolation, depression, patient safety issues and can impede a clinician’s ability to perform an accurate assessment.

Time points:

    • Start of Care

Clinicians should ask the patient to identify their preferred language and whether or not the patient needs or wants an interpreter to communicate with health care providers.

    • A1110A: What is your preferred language?
    • A1110B: Do you need or want an interpreter to communicate with a doctor or health care staff?
      • Code 0, No
      • Code 1, Yes
      • Code 9, Unable to determine

A1110A:

    • Enter the preferred language the patient primarily speaks or understands
    • If the patient themselves or with the assistance of an interpreter is unable to respond
      • a proxy response is permitted
      • If neither the patient nor a proxy is able to provide a response medical record documentation may be used
    • If the patient or any available source cannot or does not identify preferred language
      • Dash IS a valid response for this item.
      • Enter the dash in the first box.

A1110B:

    • The patient indicates no need or want of an interpreter
      • Code 0, No
    • The patient indicates the need or want of an interpreter
      • Code 1, Yes
    • If the patient themselves or with the assistance of an interpreter is unable to respond
      • a proxy response is permitted
      • If neither the patient nor a proxy is able to provide a response medical record documentation may be used
    • If no source can identify whether the patient needs or wants an interpreter
      • Code 9, Unable to determine
      • Dash IS NOT a valid response for this item.

We provide clinicians that are part of the KanTime enterprise system with links to the guidance from CMS for each individual OASIS item.
